Putnam County Schools will offer summer learning opportunities for students at the elementary, middle, and high school grade levels.

Registration for summer programs will open Monday, April 10, 2023, and close Friday, May 5, 2023. Families may register students by scanning the QR code featured on grade-level brochures or selecting the below registration link.

Putnam County Schools Elementary Summer Learning Programs

Students in grades PreK-5 currently enrolled in Putnam County Schools

Students entering Kindergarten that did not attend PreK in Putnam County must contact their child's school to complete registration materials prior to the summer program start date.

Priority registration will be provided for students demonstrating deficiencies.

Focus will be on early foundational reading and math skills to assist with transitioning to kindergarten. Skills will be taught through fun, hands-on, small, and whole group instruction.

Focus will be on early foundational reading and math skills. ELA lessons and activities will target phonics skills and strategies that support a strong foundation for reading. Math lessons and activities will target number sense and addition/subtraction fluency. Student interactions in ELA and math will be predominately hands-on, combined with skill-based centers and whole-group instruction, providing a balanced learning environment.

Summer SOLE
Students Entering 3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade

Students will participate in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch Modules, iReady English Language Arts, and Math Lessons.

Japanese Immersion Camp
Students Entering 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th Grade

Camp Location:
Scott Teays Elementary

Camp Dates:
Session One: June 27-30
Session Two: August 1-4

Students may register for one session only.

Students will learn about Japanese culture through song, dance, games, and art. Student instruction is scheduled to begin at 9 am and dismissal at 2 pm. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Program developed to serve the individual needs of students and family team members of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Questions regarding services can be answered by Sharla Shirley, Director of Exceptional Education.

Putnam County Schools Middle School Summer SOLE

Student Opportunities for Learning and Engagement (SOLE)

Putnam County Schools 2023 middle school-level Summer SOLE programs are available for middle school students entering grades 6, 7, & 8, as well as students exiting grade 8. All students must currently be enrolled in a PCS public school.

Students will participate in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway Modules and English Language Arts and Math Lessons customized to their skill development needs. In addition, students will have time during lunch for outside physical activity and games.

Students will complete one PLTW module per camp session and will be placed based on availability. PLTW modules for Summer Programming include:

Flight and Space - The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through the Flight and Space (FS) unit. Students become engineers as they design, prototype, and test models to learn about the science of flight and what it takes to travel and live in space. They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars.

Energy and the Environment - Students are challenged to think big and toward the future as they explore sustainable solutions to our energy needs and investigate the impact of energy on our lives and the world. They use what they’ve learned to design and model alternative energy sources and evaluate options for reducing energy consumption.

Medical Detectives - Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease(s). Students solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks.

ACT/SAT Prep
ACT/SAT Prep is a virtual course that will help students develop skills and test-taking strategies to improve ACT/SAT achievement scores.

TASC Preparation
Dates: June 13 - July 31
Location: Putnam Career & Technical Center

  • Instruction & Support Available Daily from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm

  • Student assignment by CTE Director in Collaboration with Attendance Director

Credit Recovery
Dates: June 13 - July 31
Locations: Hurricane High School & Poca High School

  • Student Arrival Beginning at 8:00 am

  • Instruction Begins at 8:30 am

  • Student Dismissal at 2:30 pm

  • Breakfast and Lunch Provided

  • Transportation Available

Program Details:

  • Students will participate in West Virginia Virtual School Online Credit Recovery

  • Students will be registered by school counselor

  • Family members are required to complete and submit technology paperwork prior to enrollment in coursework

  • Students will be issued a laptop on the first day of program

  • Students will remain on campus each day until course is complete

  • Students with the goal to earn multiple credits will complete one course at a time

Drivers Education

Location: Poca High School Driving Range

Students can enroll in one of two daily sessions.
