On Tuesday, September 15, 2020, Governor Jim Justice made an update to the school re-entry metrics and the color-coded map system that will determine how in-person instruction, athletics, and other extracurricular activities are conducted for West Virginia Schools. Governor Justice added a gold metric. In gold, counties are able to move to an in-person instructional model with restrictions, including face coverings at all times.

As part of West Virginia’s state-wide COVID-19 alert system, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR) posts a daily map to guide the West Virginia Department of Education’s (WVDE) School Alert System.

Message to Families: Putnam County Orange - PCS Remote Learning

Putnam County is currently orange based on the West Virginia Department of Education’s (WVDE) School Re-Entry Map shared Saturday evening, September 5, 2020.  An orange identification means that PCS students enrolled in the 5-Day In-Person Learning Model will participate remotely September 8-11 with and all extracurricular activities and sports permitted to practice but not compete. PCS families who opted for virtual learning will begin as planned.

Families received a mailer this weekend regarding how to access Schoology, the PCS new learning management system.  Students can also access Schoology by using their school email address and password.  This platform will be used during the 2020-21 school year for instruction, assignment access, class and course information, to record and display attendance and grades, and as a tool for schools to communicate.

Families will receive school-specific start up information tomorrow, September 7, from their child’s school(s) that will include middle and high school device deployment plans, meal site distribution schedules and for, 5-Day In-Person elementary families, the distribution of learning packet details as we await receipt of iPads.

Please know, PCS understands that opening remotely is not the ideal way for families to begin the school year. PCS will serve students and families with patience and grace, we ask that our school community continue to do the same for our educators who continue to adapt and plan for learning scenarios, both in-personal and virtual.

Student and staff safety remain at the forefront in all that we do. Please continue to check the PCS website and social media accounts for updates and communications throughout the upcoming week.

The next scheduled update to the WVDE School Re-Entry Map is Saturday, September 12, at approximately 9 pm. Again, you can expect a call from PCS Sunday evening regarding the map status and other essential information for students and families.
